When one thinks of Egypt the mind almost automatically turns to the civilization of the Pharoas, to its vastly imposing architectural expression, to the development of theocratic thought as the fulcrum of an empire which developed over thousands of years along the supporting axis of the River Nile. Our collective memory is crowded with pyramids and obelisks, with divinities and kings, with immense riches, sophisticated articles and furnishings fashioned from precious, exotic materials by skilful craftsmen, classical iconography representing pharoahs and their servants, "cartoon" sequences which recreata scenes from the life of the deceased on the walls of his burial chamber. But the Egypt revealed to the Werstern world by Napoleon's officers - one of the most imposing and arcane civilizations of the Ancient World though it may have been - is not the only Egypt.
