The name Lebanon is derived from an ancient Semitic word meaning "white as milk". In the case of Lebanon we might say as white as permanently snow-capped peaks of the White Mountain (Mount Lebanon), a chain making up the backbone of the country. The heart of this mountain chain is Qadisha (the sacred valley). Cutting across the mountains like a deep wound, the valley has a host of small monasteries and was the stage for remarkable story of the Maronites.
