"Sarduri, son of Lutipri, great and powerful king of the Universe, king of the land of Nairi, king without equal, great sherpherd, fearless in battle, tamer of the untamed. I am Sarduri, son of Lutipri: I carried off these stones from within the city of Aliunu. I built this wall".
These words, uttered by the first Ururrtian sovereign, engarved in Assyrian on a block of stone placed at the foot of the rock of Van, bear witness to the arrival on the scene of a powerful political entity in the history of the Middle East: the kingdom of Urartu.
