A memory of a journey amongst the Tarahumara is bound to embrace the emotional impact of the savage beauty of the country. The French playwright Artaud was profoundly moved by the region: "... the peculiar shapes of the rocks and even more the grades of hazy light on peak after peak ranging one above the other into the infinite distance; the unimaginable depth conveyed a sense of lived experience, something which had already passed through me and not the discovery of a strange but new world...".
