Seven thousand miles southwest of Hawaii, in the equatorial Pacific, lies Truk Lagoon. It is surrounded by 11 major islands, making it the world's largest natural anchorage. Its size and remoteness made it the ideal staging station for the Japanese Navy during World War II. Four decades ago this lagoon held over 60 vessels of the Japanese Imperial Fleet.
