The myth of "Prete Gianni" (a priest called Gianni) was a chimera that Medieval Westren Europe pursued beyond all geographical boundaries, obsessed by the idea that, in addition to the Muslim world, there might be another magical parallel Christian world.
Joining up with this second empire would have meant forcing the Arabs between two fires, annihilating their trade hegemony and ensuring that all those who had taken up arms would be thanked by the whole of Christendom as well as seize control of all the traffic to the Orient. In short, the hope of finding this secondo empire tied in perfectly with the prevalente aspirations of all good Christian Kings: serve God and grow rich at the expense of the Muslims.
