The custom of offering gifts to the gods goes back to time immemorial. It has always been part of every cult, religion or civilization. The first kind of gift was probably a flower from a field, a "gift of beauty", for some bucolic altar. Belief in the supernatural is an intrinsic part of the human soul: with the development of increasingly complex social life this need has become more intense, and to win the favours of a greater being, gifts have become propitiatory: "I bring you this gift so that you will protect me".
