Body painting is one of the earliest and most important manifestations of indigenous culture and art, although now it is only practised by an increasingly small number of peoples. Due to deep-rooted prejudices and stereotypes, it is often written off as a "primitive" custom or simply an aesthetic embellishment (or even anti-aesthetic brutalisation). But an analysis taking into account its cultural background, meaning and functions reveal it is a genuine visaul language expressing a vision of the human person, encouraging the process of socialisation and strengthening ethnic identity.
