The Chinese emperor Wudi of the Han dynasty lived in the second century BC. When his favourite concubine died, the emperor was thrown into such a state of prostration that the imperial administration was paralysed. To try and bring back him to his senses, a Taoist monk cut out a silhouette of woman and began to gently move it at the sovereign's window, prounincing words of comfort and encouragement.
